Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an elementary school that is part of a large school district. My students are an amazing bunch of intelligent, creative, and curious young people. My students have a great sense of community and want to help each other, their teacher and their world. They amaze me with their desire to learn.

There is a buzz about books in our classroom.

Students are provided with many opportunities to discuss what they are reading in small groups, large groups, and with reading buddies. The more books available for students, the greater the buzz becomes.

My Project

Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
