My Project

As the full-time school therapist for K–8 students in our district, I witness daily the impact that direct and indirect trauma has on our young learners—whether it’s grief from loss, or the chronic stress of community challenges. Traditional desks and seats can feel confining when a child is overwhelmed; flexible seating options (such as wobble stools, floor cushions, and standing desks) allow students to self-regulate their energy and focus, offering a sense of control and comfort during lessons. By giving them choice in where and how they sit, we honor their individual needs, reduce restlessness, and create an atmosphere where every child feels physically and emotionally safe to learn.

These resources will provide students with a small reprieve throughout the school day, empowering them to identify their feelings, practice coping skills, and seek support before their emotions escalate.

Consistent access to SEL materials not only builds resilience and interpersonal skills but also fosters a classroom culture of empathy and mutual respect—essential foundations for academic success and long-term well-being. Equally important are dedicated social-emotional learning (SEL) tools: emotion-check-in charts, calming kits with stress balls and fidget tools, and “peace corners” stocked with guided-meditation scripts and soft lighting.
