Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A professional puppeteer can introduce the world of puppetry to my class. This project will allow my students to work with Ellen Schulze, a master puppeteer. She will fuel my students' imaginations and help them create amazing puppets that will combine the areas of visual arts and performing arts.

I have a wonderful class of second graders.

Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in their family to finish high school and hopefully college, too. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students, autistic students, and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. Additionally, I partner with a third grade class and these students will also participate in this project.

My Project

Ellen Schulze is a professional puppeteer who will come to my school and teach a one hour puppetry workshop with my second grade students and then also teach a one hour puppetry workshop to our third grade buddy class. This workshop will include introducing students to the basics of puppetry. My students will also learn the steps to designing and building their very own puppets. Then she will teach my class how to make their puppets move and appear to come alive. This project will foster many valuable skills for my students. They will be able to look at a variety of puppets to gain inspiration for their own creations. They will also be able to use their own imagination and self-expression skills as they work to create their puppets. My students will also be able to collaborate with each other and use problem solving skills as they create their masterpieces. This will be an incredible opportunity for my students to learn from a real puppeteer and create their own amazing puppets.

This project will allow my students to learn about puppetry and create amazing puppets.

It will also enable me to bring visual and performing arts into my classroom. As an exciting culminating activity for this project, my students will get to work with their third grade buddies and create a puppet skit or dance that they will perform for their peers. I want this project to help inspire my students' imagination and encourage them to stay in school and possibly pursue a career in the arts.
