This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"One child, one teacher, one pen, one book can change the world" are words spoken by Malala Yousafzai. It is a quote that is displayed in my classroom that I want my students to remember everyday.
As a middle school teacher in a Title 1 school in an urban area, I have two cores of students for ELA and history.
This year, my two groups are very distinct from one another. I have a group of GATE students who are eager and excited to obtain in depth knowledge about a subject. My other group is quite different. They are struggling learners who want to please their teachers but lack academic skills. Both groups are a joy to be around but for different reasons.
My Project
One group of students will read the full biography to learn about the life of Malala, while the other group will read the young reader version. We will read part together and part independently. Students will also learn about her life through a few articles, images and videos. At the end of the unit, students will make a 30 second to one minute PSA to explain why access to education is key to a successful feature.
Last year, my students read several articles about Malala and wanted to know more.
They were truly inspired about her bravery and passion to make people aware of the situation in Pakistan for girls. The donation of these materials will help students have access to more information and inspire them to do the right thing in tough situations, speak up for their beliefs and no be afraid, just like Malala.
