Help Bring the Library to Life With Stem Activities

Help me give my students the resources to bring excitement into the library. Students will use these stem and hands- on resources to extend their book experiences.

My Project

I am transiting from 18 years in the classroom into the librarian position of serving 3 schools from Pre-K to 6th grade. With the classroom curriculum having to be followed with fidelity, it leaves no room to explore books for fun anymore in the classroom. That is one of the reasons for my transition. I want to bring the love of reading back to students. My goal is to bring life to the library by incorporating stem activities to go along with stories. I want my students develop a love a books and to be excited to come to the library.

I want to spark excitement with these resources.

For example, I plan to use the magnifying glasses, bugs, and book to bring the book to life. I will put the bugs in a bag and create suspense as I pull each one out of the bag. The students can infer what we will be reading about. Afterwards, the students will use the magnifying glasses to have a closer look at the bugs. I plan to do the same thing with the ocean animals and farm animals. For example, before starting Charlotte's Web, I will bring out the farm animals and spider to introduce the book.

The stem resources will be used in stations to create literary elements of stories, such as characters/events/setting of stories, as well as just to experiment. They can also be used to re-create stories or even create a new story. The possibilities are limitless.

The playdoh will be used in similar way to create characters/events/setting. It will also be used for the littles to make letters, numbers, and words.

All these resources will bring life to the library and expand the library learning experience. Our kids NEED this so much right now.
