My Students

Help give 32 Brooklyn students access to a brand new leveled nonfiction library! You can help prepare them for their state science test while teaching them the interesting facts they need to know about the world in which they live!

The 4th grade College Kids Club is a combined classroom of special education and general education students in Brooklyn, NY.

It has 32 students, 11 of whom receive special education services. All of the students are bright, committed to their own education, and brimming with potential. The classroom is diverse, benefiting from cultural connections to Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. But these students also face a number of challenges. More than a third of the class does not speak English as their primary language at home. All but one student qualifies for free or reduced price school lunches, a measure often used to indicate economic status. More than half of the students in the class are more than a full academic year behind in reading, writing, and math.

My Project

Book bins will be sorted by reading level and subject. The library will be used across many subjects and units. First, students will be allowed to shop for books that interest them on their level to read during independent reading time. This is especially useful for boys who are reading behind grade level, as low level nonfiction books are still of great interest to them. Next, the books will be used during the nonfiction literacy unit to introduce nonfiction text features such as headings, glossaries, picture captions, and picture labels. Having a wide variety of books at each student’s reading level will make this unit more interesting and accessible. Finally, the nonfiction library will be used to prepare students for upcoming science, social studies, and math units by activating and building prior knowledge about 4th grade concepts. This will help prepare students for their state tests at the end of the year while building their love of reading and the natural world!

In my own middle class elementary school classrooms, I had access to thousands of books, covering all the genres imaginable, organized to make them accessible to me at my specific reading level.

The students I teach now have never had those resources available to them. Will you please help build our classroom’s nonfiction book library? In doing so, you will be helping a class of Brooklyn kids grow their brains, learn about the world, and compete with suburban students who have more resources.
