Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are recent immigrants to the United States, and almost all of them are English Language Learners. Many of our students have experienced interruptions in their education; our students also struggle to meet the academic expectations of high school.
Our Title I high school is located in the South East Bronx.
Our students are incredibly resilient; they are working to overcome tremendous obstacles to their education related to poverty, their recent arrival to the United States (and separation from family), and the challenge of learning in a new language.
My Project
Each class at our high school is named in honor of an inspirational leader. Our incoming first year students will join the "Malala Yousafzai House." We hope to take all of our first years, and some select seniors, to see the new documentary "He Named Me Malala." Not only will this trip support our students' academic needs (they will be reading excerpts from Malala's autobiography, "I Am Malala," during the year), but it will also inspire them to continue to work hard in high school.
We hope this class trip will help our first year students to create a sense of shared community.
We look forward to using the supporting materials related to the documentary in the classroom and in our students' advisory groups. We believe that Malala's story will inspire our students to achieve academic success.
