Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a terrific bunch of caring, hardworking, curious and fun students. They come to school to learn every day and are respectful to each other and their teachers. They all get really excited about learning - no matter what the subject or setting, these kids are into it. The best thing about my students is how helpful and collaborative they are. In class we have chances to code via Code.org and the kids are always helping each other out. They support each other's learning and that's something I want to continue to foster.
My Project
My students are proficient writers but they are not very good at typing. Even if they want to convert their work to a soft copy they don't have enough time in the day to use computers because we don't have enough computers for kids to use. Research projects, writing projects, coding, learning to browse the web safely, practicing good etiquette are all powerful and important things I want my fourth graders to learn and yet they are held back by a lack of computers.
PLUS, we like to move around the school and our neighborhood.
It would be amazing if we could bring our laptops into the field with us and capture our ideas right then and there! So many adults have spent their professional careers using technology and yet we have students that are only exposed to it in ways related to entertainment (watching youtube, playing games). They adapt so well to technology and yet, they don't engage with it enough as scholars!
