Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States, not too far from the richest district. Entering sixth grade, they are already years behind their more affluent counterparts in both math and reading.

We don't let their zip code dictate their future.

Our goal as a school is to get our students to and through college. Our students are three times more likely to graduate from a four-year college or university than the low-income average. Our students work hard and have fun.

My Project

In my 22 years of teaching 6th-grade math, I've never been more excited (but also concerned) about this upcoming school year. My students start school on August 9 and many have experienced a lot of hardship during the pandemic.

Students are going to need a lot of emotional support during this school year, and I want to make sure my classroom is fun and exciting for them.

These items will help my students be excited about coming to class and enjoy learning more. I purchased a gumball/vending machine with my own money, but some of the items in this project will be used to fill up the machine. In addition, I incorporate magic into my math class by teaching them mathematical magic tricks. The magic wands will be given to each student to use during class. Finally, I want to make sure students feel happy and proud when it's their birthday. Some items in the project are going to be used to give to the students when it's their special day.
