This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine how difficult it is to teach a child to read basic words like mat and rip if they don't even know what those things are. That's the challenge of every child in my ESL class. We work hard each day to learn English. My goal is for all students to communicate in English by the end of the year.

All of my students come from families where a language other than English is spoken at home.

This growing population of students is eager to learn English and hard-working but they face special challenges unique to second language learners. For many of my students, this year is their first experience with school and they need a lot of language support to be successful. Many materials provided for classes at my school lack the additional emphasis on language acquisition that my ESL students require. The kids in my class are bright, creative, inquisitive and appreciative. With a little help to bring the best resources to our class, these students are capable of achieving anything they can imagine.

My Project

These resources will allow students to practice the skills we are learning. I've chosen to focus on materials that will grow students English skills in all four areas: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Storytelling puppets allow students to use English speech in a structured way, by practicing retelling familiar stories with partners. Phonics centers give students what they need to practice independently and reinforce their learning. Vocabulary cards help jump start students just beginning to learn English and give them words to express the people, places and objects they will encounter most often. Students learning English as a second language have particular difficulty with understanding English rhyming words. The resources I've chosen will promote mastery of this difficult concept.

I wish you all had the chance to watch a child move from barely able to understand English to confidently speaking and using the language.

It is an amazing gift that will change the course of their life and the opportunities they have forever. Your donation fills in the gaps to support our English learners in the ways they need to be most successful in school. The language learning that happens in their kindergarten year sets them up to be excellent students for more than a decade to come.
