Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is a class of children with moderate to severe autism, so throughout the day there is screaming, tantrums, and children running out of the room. By the end of the year I want to see my students following the classroom routine. As a teacher all I can do is try my best to teach my students.

I have a classroom of 11 students with moderate to severe autism in grades kindergarten to fifth.

I have three students in kindergarten, two in first grade, three in second grade, one in third, and two in fifth. Some of my students are non-verbal and speak using signs or pictures. Other students have behavior problems that consist of running out of the room, throwing things, screaming, crying, hitting, biting, going under tables, throwing furniture, and the list goes on. Some of my students have very high sensory needs. They need constant massages, constant breaks, special cushions to sit on, and special balls to play with. However, they are amazing and hard working. They make me proud. My school is in the inner city of Los Angeles. It is low income and does not have all the funds it needs to purchase everything I need for my classroom. The school has a mixture of nationalities, as does my classroom (Hispanic, Asian, African American, etc.).

My Project

The timers will be used to help structure the classroom throughout the day. Students with autism are visual learners and they need to see and know what will happen next. The adhesive roll will be used to protect paper materials so they students don't tear them. The pocket charts and stands will be used to help learn high frequency words and to put pictures for students that have a difficult time communicating. The toothbrush holders will be used during health so they learn how to brush their teeth. Overall, all the supplies will help the children learn anything from language arts to math and communication.

All these supplies will help my students learn, and they will assist with their visual needs.

By donating you will help a child with moderate to severe autism learn and grow academically. They will also grow in the area of life skills. Being a child with autism is difficult so let's just try to make it less stressful and fun.
