My Students

Autism now affects 1 in 70 boys. In our inner city classroom, with 8 boys with autism, our printing budget is no longer able to support the amount of ink we need. The children in our classroom need colorful instructional materials.

The children in this classroom all have a primary diagnosis of autism and some students have secondary diagnosis of other disabilities as well.

They are at an elementary school in an urban setting in the primary grade levels. All of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches.

My Project

Our curriculum is comprised primarily of an online standard based curriculum called Unique Learning. This company focuses on creating lessons for students with low incidence disabilities and uses many graphics to help support literacy instruction. Unique has a new thematic unit every month, teachers must download and print these curriculum materials. Due to this online curriculum, 100% of the material is located on the Internet and therefore can be downloaded on any computer with a subscription to Unique. This means that in order to use color instructional materials we need more ink! Students with autism learn best with bright colors; therefore we need to have ink cartridges to last us through the school year.

Please help an autism classroom in an urban school be able to be able to have instructional materials in color!

Our students have made huge gains this year, and we hope to keep students working hard. Research states that students with autism work best by learning in color and by using simple graphics that is included in the curriculum we are exposing our students to.
