Help All of My Students Succeed!

Help me give my students books that reflect a variety of abilities, adaptive tools for art and sensory exploration, and materials for dramatic play.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Stack's classroom raised $539

My Students

My students are challenged in many ways. My school is situated in the poorest section of our urban district, and are all eligible for free breakfast and lunch. School is the place where they are safe, fed, and nurtured throughout the day. Their daily life is a struggle as it is, but these children are further burdened by their disabilities.

I teach both mainstream students, many of whom are coming to school for the first time as well as physically disabled students who are integrated into the program to benefit from modeling by typically developing peers.

I'm looking to provide materials that reflect the diversity of my students and that will support their engagement in the classroom environment. Two of my students use wheelchairs/walkers and I want to provide them dolls that look like them as well as books that feature characters of many different mobility levels. My typical students will benefit from books that help to demonstrate that these students have thoughts and feelings just like them and can alleviate any trepidation they have. Other items, like specialized art tools, will help these students access the curriculum.

My Project

Adaptive art and sensory tools like large grip brushes will allow my students with limited fine motor skills to participate and engage with their typical peers at the table.

A variety of books featuring characters with different mobility levels that better represent my students as well as dramatic play materials that reflect their diversity will help these students feel valued and included.

I'm excited to find some books I can read with my typical preschoolers to help demystify their peers' disabilities, and I'm hopeful this will help all students be included when students play. I want to build empathy and understanding in my typical students.
