My Students

Being inside a jail without access to sunlight causes students to become depressed and unhealthy.

We serve youthful offenders in grades 6 to 12, ages 12 to 18, 95% of whom are wards of the court or foster youth of color at or below the poverty line who have experienced trauma and violence in their lives.

The students are predominantly African American, followed by Latino, Samoan, Asian and Caucasian: 59% Black, 31% Latino; 4% Samoan, 2% Asian, 2% other. There are a high percentage of foster youth. Most are English learners with academic skills far below grade level and a history of inconsistent school attendance. Some are undocumented youth from Central America who have never attended school at all. The average stay for a student is one month, though many stay well beyond that, some for more than a year or two. When a youth fails placement by probation or re-offends, they may be returned to the center multiple times.

My Project

Our students have a vision of creating a garden here at juvenile hall. They decided that it is way too drab inside and that they need access to living things in order to learn to care for themselves effectively. When our students learned about ABC Family and their offer to help student driven projects, the students begged us to submit for indoor gardens. They want to learn to grow things that they can eat. The students' institutional food here is not good quality and they have decided to change this by growing their own food. We hope ABC Family will help us.

Just like the vast majority of low-income youth of color, our students are plagued by alarmingly high obesity and diabetes rates that are a direct result of the poor diets available to them.

Please help our students realize their dream of creating a healthier life through gardening.
