Our students are struggling through the enormous task of learning the new common core standards. In order to better support them we have developed a learning center where we can support students who are struggling in a smaller comfortable learning environment with reading, writing and math.
We have over 180 students that we support daily.
They are very hard working and determined individuals with disabilities. These individuals have been identified for support in the Learning Center to improve their ability to understand the curriculum being taught to them in the largest high school of our district. Their challenges vary from having Autism, Emotional Disturbance, Traumatic Stress, Learning Disabilities and/or a variety of Severe Intellectual Disabilities.
16 desks and 16 chairs will allow our Learning Center to be a comfortable moldable place where students can come into the class for academic support and be able to move around freely to either work in small groups with an educator on specific skills or a test and then adjust and sit in a large groups for direct instruction or to view an academic video that captures an idea for Science, History, Math and/or English.
This project will turn the room into a whole new space where learning can really be maximized in an equitable manner for all students to get what they need in order to meet the requirements to get their diploma and to graduate and become responsible college bound students and future leaders in higher education settings or in properly placed employment where their gifts and talents can truly shine.
