Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We need magnetic word builders to build good readers! I am a first grade teacher at an urban public school in a high-need community.

Many of my students are English Language Learners and and need hands on materials to help them learn their letters, sounds, and words. I currently do not have the supplies to create an effective word building center where students can manipulate letters and word chunks to make words.

I need magnetic letters, magnetic word builders, and magnetic word families to give my students the tools to make words in a meaningful way. These materials will be at a center that my students will rotate to daily and weekly. I will also use the materials in whole class spelling games and activities. By manipulating the letters and word chunks themselves, students will construct a strong word knowledge base that will transfer to their ability to decode words as they read within the context of a story.

The whole point of teaching reading is so that students can understand what they read. If students cannot decode words and do not know letter sounds, word families, and phonic rules, their comprehension will suffer greatly. Your help will ensure that my students will be able to focus on the meaning of stories!
