Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be a brand new challenge. After teaching second grade for six years, I'm moving up to fifth grade! I just can't wait to see some of my old students again. However, I don't have any supplies for them... I already know that the most urgent activities I need to provide relate to literacy.
Our school is a Social Justice and Language Arts Magnet and our focus is the respect of self and others.
This encompasses discipline and high expectations as well as activism and compassion. African American students usually make up 75% of my class; the rest includes a rich diversity of cultures such as Latino and Asian. This situation offers unlimited opportunities to learn tolerance and team work while discovering new perspectives. However, our school and our families can't afford the sources we need to support academic knowledge and significantly improve student achievement.
My Project
Part of the day is dedicated to what we call "Reading to Self." Students grab their reading folder and a cushion and settle somewhere in the room. They love this comfortable time when they can dive into a book. However, I don't own enough of them for all my fifth graders! Furthermore, the day also includes "Independent Work Time/I.W.T." when students choose the area they need to improve and the way they will study. The activities that I selected would allow them to improve various reading and writing skills: affixes, similes, metaphors, and analogies. Your donation would support their learning as well enhance their motivation to learn!
Most educators and researchers agree that students learn if they are actively engaged in their learning and I.W.T.
became essential to education. Your generosity would greatly help the class that doesn't possess any attracting activities to choose from right now. Thank to you, our I.W.T. would become diverse and effective!
