My Students
Help me transport my students back 400 years and across 5,000 miles to Colonial America!
We are two teachers who co-teach a class of 18 eager 5th graders at a Title-1 public school in Hawaii.
Our school practices mindfulness through the Habits of Mind. As part of a heterogeneous class that focuses on team and community, our students enjoy learning, reading, and achieving together. They also enjoy games, dancing, and gardening.
My Project
Hawaii's 5th grade social studies curriculum focuses on The Age of Exploration and Colonialism, ending with the Revolutionary War. While we live in a beautiful place, it's often hard for the students to imagine life in New England, let alone 400 years ago! They loved reading a historical novel about James Town in 1607. I am requesting class sets of the historical novels "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson and "Dear America: The Winter of Red Snow" by Kristiana Gregory. Our class will read these books together as a group, stopping often to discuss, write, question, and draw about the reading. With similar books from this grant, they will be able to keep learning about this time period and practice their reading skills.
Students will practice reading in pairs, groups, and individually.
The content in the books will also help inspire writing, art, and creativity projects. Your donations will help broaden knowledge of history and the world for a class of curious learners. These books can help create a future generation of life long learners and readers!
