Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 4th grade teacher working in an ethnically diverse, San Leandro classroom. My 10-year old students are African-American, Latino, Filipino, Yemenese, Chinese, Korean, White, and Multi-racial. I have 28 students, most of whom are poor, and many of whom are second-language learners.
One of my goals as a teacher is to help my students think more deeply about issues of race and stereotypes. One of the ways I do this is by reading aloud from books that deal specifically with the topics of race and culture. Examples of such books include: All the Colors We Are: The Story of How We Get Our Skin Color; Shades of Black: A Celebration of Our Children; Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia.
These colorful, thoughtful, engaging books are not part of my school district's core literature program, so I need to buy them for myself. I have spent several weeks developing a list of books that speak to skin color, or the specific cultures of all of my students and their families. If someone is able to donate them, you will be helping my students develop empathy for others whose culture is different from their own, and ultimately, help my students grow to be more caring members of this world.
