Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Diversity. Sure we all know know what it means, but how much do we really know about our neighbors abroad.

My students live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles.

Here is the Mecca of diversity but just because there are people of diverse backgrounds here doesn't mean we really know about them. My students have ate Chinese food but don't know about the Chinese culture or even that the Chinese fast food they eat is not "real" Chinese food. As our world becomes smaller and smaller, I want my students to be prepared for the future by knowing about the vast cultures in our world. I want them to appreciate differences they have with others. Learning about diversity and civil rights will help begin to shape their understanding of being tolerant of others. This new found appreciation can also lead to a decline in bullying that usually begins in third grade. I will be reading Bullying in Schools to them as well so they can learn about the importance of being tolerant of each other as well.

My Project

The California Common Core Standards call for a majority of expository (informational) reading and writing. Having my students read, study and write about diversity and civil rights will serve a dual purpose: enhance their proficiency in understanding and synthesizing text and learn that they are not the only culture that has values and beliefs that are unique. I envision my students researching informational articles and watching documentaries on various cultures and then comparing and contrasting how these different cultures are like/unlike their own. While some students researching that others can research and write reports on civil rights within our own country. Some of us have the right to vote, for example, and can't even begin to fathom what it was like to be treated like your opinion had no weight. Now more than ever it is essential that young people of today learn about tolerance and a global culture.

The Kindle fires and the text, Bullying in Schools, will help my students research, read and write about how every person is equally important to our world culture.

The best part of all is that both of these resources can be used year after year. So my students year after year will be engaged in this learning.
