Help 2nd Graders Come Face-To-Face With Prehistoric Pets
My students need a hand-on opportunity to see up close some of the insects and reptiles that they are learning about in their 2nd grade science and Language Arts books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of future scientists including potential biologists and zoologists. We need more hands-on opportunities to see and observe some of the animals we are learning about. My students need an opportunity to see some insects and reptiles with an engaging classroom presentation. This visit will excite my students and encourage them to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
I have a wonderful class of second graders.
Our school is located in a high immigrant, low-income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and, hopefully, college, too. Most of my students are English learners. I also have several students with learning disabilities in my all-inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner with a 2nd-grade hard-of-hearing class and they will participate in this project, too.
My Project
Prehistoric Pets will come to my classroom to put on a one-hour Jurassic classroom presentation for my 2nd-grade students and a class of hard-of-hearing 2nd graders at my school. They will bring 10-15 different animals, including various exotic reptiles and insects. My students will be able to see and observe some of the animals that they are learning about as part of their science unit on animal classification and their Language arts unit on animal camouflage. As part of the classroom presentation, they will also get to touch and hold some of the different animals.
My students love science!
I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. I want my students to be able to see some very interesting and exotic animals that most of them have only seen pictures of in their science book. I want this project to help inspire my students' imaginations and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
