Help 1st Graders Better Understand Other Cultures with Magazines!
My students need 35 copies of a year long subscription of National Geographic Explorer, Voyager Edition, for 1st graders so each of my student can better understand other cultures.
I am the librarian at a small public school which is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. We are a Title I school with a poverty rate of 97%. Almost 15% of our students are homeless. Numerous families receive weekend food assistance in their child's backpack from our local food bank.
Many of my students are reluctant readers and academic success does not come easily or quickly.
In our school, we strive to create warm, safe and welcoming classrooms while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
My Project
I am requesting a yearly subscription to National Geographic Explorer Magazine, Voyager edition magazine for my first grade students. Many of my students have never traveled outside our county, so having the background knowledge of visiting the beach, another state or country is a unique and new concept. Additionally, most of my students do not have access to grade level reading materials at home outside of the classroom.
I am requesting a National Geographic Explorer subscription for my first grade students to take them on journeys beyond our school building to experience culture around the world.
With the digital component of the subscription, my students who struggle with reading comprehension would also be able to access grade level texts by allowing the online component to read to them. The games at accompany each edition will help keep them engaged in their learning. Lastly, this magazine would also help teachers differentiate to the various learning styles of the students in my classroom.
