My Students
"I don't like to read," is something I hear from my students. After working with struggling readers for over 10 years I know it's not that students don't like to read, it's that they struggle as readers. The only remedy for struggling readers is to get books in their hands that they cannot let go.
I work at an all girls public school in NYC with students of culturally diverse backgrounds.
Many of my girls receive free or reduced lunch. Many have made it to the 10th grade and have yet to realize the joys of reading. My students love discussing the world and are insightful young ladies. I want to take this spark and ignite a love of reading so that they are ready for college and life. It's important that my students understand the importance of reading and becoming life long learners.
My Project
I have a cozy little area in the corner of my classroom with a carpet and bean bags. The only thing missing is a good library! I want students to be able to access high interest books on the appropriate level so that they may learn to love reading. I envision students making book clubs, pouring over books and signing up on waiting lists for those "must read" books. I seek a quiet buzz in my classroom where the wheels are turning as each page turns and students excitedly share new understandings and insights on life.
This donation will create life long learners and inquisitive young minds.
I want to give my struggling readers something so powerful, nothing will be able to stop them. My students will be able to tackle any task with ease because they have one of the greatest gifts in life; being a good reader. Once my students understand the joys of reading they will be able to read the world in which they live and enact positive change on a personal and global level.
