Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
BMI or body mass index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is important for me to measure student BMI so we can assess their risk for certain diseases and help them to control their weight while becoming more physically active.
My students are inner-city children of Hispanic (75%) and African American (25%) descent.
The school is a public school located in a downtown area dominated by factories, commercial companies, high traffic including tractor trailers, and high poverty. I service 500 students in grades Pre-K to 5th. Ninety-nine percent of the students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
These students spend hours at home behind the television and video games because their neighborhood is not equipped for outdoor play. Their neighborhoods are riddled with crime and run-down playgrounds that are not inviting. These students also have unhealthy diets because their neighborhoods are filled with fast food restaurants. Their families often don't eat healthy meals because they prefer the cheaper alternatives such as pizza and french fries. This takes a toll on their overall physical health. The students become sluggish and over weight.
The physician's scale will help me to assess their height and weight in order to help them develop a plan for increased physical activity and less hours of dormancy.
Student BMIs will also give parents a clearer picture of their child's overall health. This information will assist parents to partner with schools to increase physical activity and help their children to become healthier.
