Through the years, I have learned there are no "typical" days in the classroom. This year, I have had the opportunity to work with a wonderful group of students. We believe that an exciting and interactive classroom environment provides the perfect space for learning to occur.
Our classroom consists of twenty-five enthusiastic 3rd graders, at least on most days.
Our class enjoys all activities that allow them to work in groups and recess! Because all students love recess, this year I have tried to bring more enjoyable learning opportunities into the classroom. The idea of getting a class pet actually came about during our writing time. Without prompting, several students complied independent research on various animals we mentioned in class. After seeing all of their hard work researching and how excited the students had become, I knew we had to follow through with getting a class pet. We decided on a hedgehog.
My Project
A class pet is a valuable learning opportunity for my students but can come with a steep commitment for the teacher. I have requested several items that will decrease the upkeep costs of our class hedgehog. I have included a large cage and basic supplies for our hedgehog. Our class will learn many important lessons by caring for our class hedgehog, primarily, respect and responsibility. Unlike some class pets, our hedgehog will be cared for and played with daily to promote our learning goals.
Adding a hedgehog to our class, will bring a wealth of learning opportunities.
Allowing the students to take on partial responsibility in the care of the hedgehog, will give them a sense of belonging and importance in the classroom. In addition to character building, exposing children to an atypical pet will allow them to make connections in science and other subject areas.
Our hedgehog will be picked up from the breeder mid-April. Please help us get these supplies before our hedgehog arrives
