Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What do Superman, Magneto, and the Hulk all have in common? Science. Without Kryptonite, magnetic force fields, and high-energy gamma rays these guys would just be Clark Kent, Erik Lensherr, and Bruce Banner. What type of scientific super-human would you be?

My students come from a high poverty neighborhood with a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple family, foster, migrant, and military to name a few.

With such diversity, it is to be expected that each student is going to have a very divergent range of personal, social, emotional, and educational needs when compared to schools that serve a more homogeneous population. This aside, they are just children and need to have fun, and laugh, question, explore, create, and interact with each other in an effort to develop the knowledge and social skills needed to be successful individuals.

My Project

Science is a tough subject to teach when relying on text books alone. Students need to be able to make prior knowledge connections with science concepts in order to retain and use them again in the future. This project will allow students to use the periodic table of elements to search for items responsive to magnetic fields. Students will use the metal detector to locate metal based objects and will then input their findings into data spreadsheets in the requested laptop for stats/graphing purposes. Students will learn how elements occur in nature, preservation and conservation of naturally occurring elements, how elements effect our environment, how to read a periodic table and the significance of atomic numbers, how metal detectors work using magnetism and magnetic fields. Finally, in effort to support Waiting for Superman and "take action" my students will also study the scientific strengths and weaknesses of superheros and how conservation efforts can help sustain our planet.

With the assistance of citizen philanthropists, conservationists, environmentalist, and other superheros I am certain that this project will come to life and help develop a desire to conserve and care for our environment by all super-human students involved.

Your contribution to this project is more than just a donation; it is a gift of knowledge that will be unwrapped daily. Thank you for your consideration.
