Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach sixth and seventh grade science at Explore Charter School in Brooklyn. From designing their own experiments to learning about phase changes and the states of matter, these hot plates would open up a new world of inquiry possibilities for the middle school science students at Explore. Many small experiments call for heating things up slowly, and with their variable temperature controls I could carefully manipulate the heat for exactly what was needed. Safety is a number one concern in the science classroom. With even heating, these hot plates are safer than traditional burners. From melting ice, to experimenting with raising the temperature of slime, students will be able to get exact temperature readings as the temperature changes and thus draw deeper conclusions from their data. We currently have no way to heat materials in our growing science department, which curtails many exciting experiments. Hot plates are a necessary part of a science lab, and these are effective and safe.
