Heating It Up In 6th Grade!

My Project

A thermal camera would be an exciting and powerful addition to our 6th grade science classroom, helping students visualize and understand concepts that are often abstract and hard to grasp. With this tool, students can explore heat transfer, insulation, energy efficiency, and even conduct experiments related to biology and the environment. Instead of simply reading about conduction and radiation, students will be able to see how heat moves through materials or how body temperatures differ, making their learning more engaging, hands-on, and memorable.

The goal of this project is to deepen students' understanding of scientific principles through inquiry-based learning.

With the thermal camera, students will conduct real-world experiments, such as testing which materials make the best insulators, measuring temperature changes during physical activity, or observing the cooling patterns of different surfaces. These investigations will promote critical thinking, collaboration, and a deeper interest in STEM—skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.

What makes my students special is their curiosity and resilience. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds and face challenges outside of school, but they show up every day ready to learn and explore. They are creative, enthusiastic, and love discovering how the world works. A thermal camera would give them access to advanced tools that are often out of reach, helping them feel like real scientists and showing them that their questions and ideas matter.
