Though four walls support my second grade classroom, our learning is not contained within them. The faces, learning styles, and family compositions are beautifully diverse. Many of the children in my class will never have an opportunity to travel outside of our state. Therefore, my priority is to bring those experiences, people, and cultures into our little classroom. Our learning takes us beyond the walls of our room.
In our classroom, I have developed a curriculum called Hearts’ Stories. Hearts’ Stories is a community building, interview curriculum that seeks to increase students’ self-awareness, self-esteem and awareness of others. The goals are accomplished by helping children discover their identity, their community, and how they are connected to others in their world by interviewing themselves and others. We need your help!
Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Matt Lauer…these iconic reporters will one day be replaced by my exceptional second grade student reporters. My young writers are in need of steno pads, card stock paper and crayons to illustrate their stories.
Thanks to your support my young writers will become the future writers of newspapers, books, magazines and journals. With your help to ensure that each of my students has a steno pad, you are equipping them with the tools necessary to capture the essence of a persons heart during an interview and than turn it into a phenomenal story that will touch hearts and possibly even change the way people think about others who are different from them.
