My students need guitars, guitar picks, and guitar learning books, songbooks, and video resources to start them on the path to becoming skilled guitarists.
PASSION! Everyone has something they are deeply passionate about. When it comes to music, the guitar pulls at my students' heart strings. Many of the students have asked "can we get guitars this year?" They would be a great addition; I know my students are ready to take on this new opportunity.
My students love exciting new opportunities.
My school is classified as Title I which means a large percentage of the student population is on free/ reduced lunch (lower socioeconomic status). Because of this, many of them may have limited access to resources and opportunities, so I look for new exciting opportunities through music that can inspire, nurture, and enrich their lives. This is my third year teaching music at my school, and ever since I began, my students have asked for guitars. Our music program currently owns just one guitar, and I began learning the instrument last year. I learned some chords and have played for my students in the mornings before the first bell rang. They were so intrigued with the instrument. They asked questions and wanted me to play more and more. A colleague notified me that the students entered their homeroom classes so calmly, with smiles on their faces, and ready for the day.
My Project
My students need guitars, guitar picks, and guitar learning books, songbooks, and video resources to start them on the path to becoming skilled guitarists. I believe providing students with the opportunity to make music and to play an instrument is one of the greatest gifts. I hear so often, "I wish I could play an instrument," or " I wish I didn't stop taking lessons when I was younger," or "how can you just play a song like that?" The ability to play an instrument and create melodies and songs is so rewarding and fulfilling. It's an artistic outlet, a means of self-expression with infinite possibilities. With guitars, my students will learn how to strum chords, play melodies, and compose and accompany tunes themselves. I am sure my students will love this experience, and they will be able to carry these experiences with them throughout the rest of their lives, whether as professional musicians, music hobbyists, or appreciators of music.
When I use the guitar, the look of excitement on my students' faces and the high level of engagement is priceless.
I strive to provide my students with various opportunities to grow and be enriched by music. For my students, adding guitars to the music program is the natural path to take, and they are ready to blaze the trail. My students will be able to play songs, accompany themselves and others, and compose original compositions. I know this will be a positive and creative outlet for them.
