This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I use Pick-A-Stick quite a bit in my classroom. It works because each student's name is on a stick, and I randomly choose names to answer questions, help out around the class, and form groups. My plan is to use this procedure to randomly select students and award them a prize if they made good decisions that day or week. For example, if a student came prepared with all of her materials that week, and her name was picked, she could win a jar of slime, a squishy ball, a stuffed animal, a candy treat, a bracelet, or more. I will also choose names on random days for things like homework completion or being on time for class. Students who were late to class or did not do their homework would not be eligible for a prize.

In many cases, students who do everything that is expected of them are not always recognized for the positive choices they make on a day-to-day basis.

Acknowledging students for making good decisions will help build morale, foster pride, and make the learning environment a more positive and inviting space. With our impressionable middle school students, this can make a world of difference in their disposition about the content matter, learning, and their own self-worth.
