My Students
The heart of my classroom is my students. I am a Certified Reading Specialist and English as a Second Language Teacher who works with language learners who are new to the country or second generation immigrants. I also work with Kindergarten-2nd Grade students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.
My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.
They are lively and smart and have the kindest of hearts. As an early elementary teacher, I am one of the first people to introduce the importance of reading and writing.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Nubu, Portuguese, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. They are seen in 45 minute-1 hour groups during the pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI and ESL classes. They love learning to read, engaging in STEAM activities, and showing their creativity like the famous artists that we study. My goal is to change the way my students feel about learning and show them how to be amazing readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians!
My Project
The current political climate in education has taken its toll on my heart as an educator. My kids deserve the best classroom learning environment that I can provide them, but it is hard to pull from an empty cup.
This project will help me get professional development and children's trade books which target the most important aspect of the elementary classroom setting: Literacy Instruction.
I spent years researching and developing an understanding of how detrimental standardized assessments are to the learning of young children. Since completing my Ph.D., my professional life has been consumed with data, standardized assessments, and ranking children by proficiency level instead of their growth and love of reading. I need help finding the heart of my classroom instruction again and the resources from this project will help me do that.
