This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion." -Max de Pree

My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.

With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer. Our school is 100% poverty stricken, with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.

My Project

Heart and Soul written by Kadir Nelson, “is the winner of numerous awards, including the 2012 Coretta Scott King Author Award and Illustrator Honor, and the recipient of five starred reviews! We will read this story of "America and African Americans". This story of hope, inspiration and unwavering courage will further our class discussions. It's a story of discrimination and broken promises, determination, and triumphs.” Bringing Jim Crow Laws to life through its illustrations and powerful words, this story would definitely support our Social Studies curriculum and recognition of Black History Month, recognizing the fact that Black history is indeed American history. This project will also provide each student with their very own box of Binney & Smith Crayola(R) Multicultural Crayons.

These crayons are special because they “provide students with an assortment of crayons that create realistic skin tones." They also "meet the artistic needs of today's culturally diverse classroom, to include Mahogany, Apricot, Burnt Sienna, Tan, Peach, Sepia, Black and White”.

Cesar Chavez said it best when he stated, "We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community and nation!
