This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How are we going to increase literacy skills amongst our youngest learners? With good teaching and great books. I am switching roles next year and will be teaching 1st grade. The majority of my students will be English Language Learners and have little access to books. The students are excited when a new book appears or a book that sparks their interest.

It takes a village to reach the needs of each individual child.

I am determined to have my students grow in their reading abilities.

My Project

Students in my classroom will rotate through centers throughout the balanced literacy block. One of their centers will be the listening center. By using the earphones and CD player the students will be able to hear great readers while looking at the book.

Students will listen to stories while increasing their oral language, expanding their vocabulary, and listening to a fluent reader.

The students will be surrounded with great books to read, but with a listening center, they will be able to hear a story. Some of their favorite characters, such as Curious George, will excite them and hopefully encourage them to read more.
