My classroom consists of students with various reading abilities. In order to differentiate to meet this challenge, we need supplies of reading material at various levels. Due to our school being a Title I school, many students face disadvantages in learning. Approximately three-fourths of our student receive free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my students enjoy doing hands-on activities, especially those that are related to science.
They enjoy doing interactive notebook activities as well. Reading and math interactive activities also inspire them to make great effort.
My students need to be able to succeed in acquiring grade level fluency when reading. Read alouds and audio books will inspire their desire to read independently.
As struggling readers, students often select books based on the pictures.
These students are beginning to read more for enjoyment; however, the books are not allowing for advancement. Affording these students the ability to hear fluent reading from sources other than their teacher will help them begin to learn that reading is fun, thus encouraging them to select more challenging books.
Picture books are an interesting initial way to to encourage reading for reluctant readers, but listening to stories as they follow along with books with be beneficial. With the Hamilton Buhl 6 Person Listening Center, my students will be able to listen to books and seek many more books to read and listen to. This will enhance their desire to read for enjoyment as they reread the books they have listened to independently.
