My Project
In my lively classroom of third graders, there is a wide array of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, many of them refugees. We learn through several different modalities. This is especially necessary because our population includes students who have suffered learning loss due to a variety of circumstances. Technology plays an ever-increasing significant role in our classroom because it can reach the most hesitant student and give him or her a fun interactive way to learn independently. In order to make the most of the technology in our classroom, each student needs to be able to hear their own computer lessons without interference from other students and computers. Unfortunately, I have been using the same set of headphones for many years and due to the extensive use by elementary-aged children over the years, these old headphones have been slowly becoming broken and obsolete. We now don't have enough for each child to have his or her own, and the ones we do have are having problems like only one side producing sound.
My students are learning the power of communication as a balance between speaking and listening, the foundation for effective learning.
Since many of them are ESOL students, having a translator device along with the headphones to bridge the communication gap would do wonders to increase their confidence, willingness to participate, and overall enjoyment of learning English and consequently all other subjects in the classroom.
The headphones, translator, and supplies I am requesting will help my students hear the words they need to develop the skill of listening, so they can support their development in all the critical communication areas - speaking, listening, reading, reading, and writing. Your support would make this happen.
