My students need a table and easel to meet and interact with during small group language intervention. They need the sound tubs and emergent reader books because my students struggle with letters and sounds.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine walking into a classroom, not knowing what to do, not knowing what the teacher is asking, not knowing how to ask for help...how would you do? My students, all of my students, have experienced these very things. The students that I am lucky to serve come from all parts of our globe, they speak all different languages, they are smart, they are kind, they are hardworking, and they are all learning English!
I work in a K-8 school dedicated to newcomers in the city of Saint Louis.
Many of my students have had little schooling before. Our school is unique because as a newcomer program all of the students in the school have recently arrived in the United States (many as refugees) and do not have the language to thrive in a mainstream classroom. At our school students focus on learning English as well as all of the core subjects, they also learn how American schools work and adjust to American social norms and customs! We do this all while still celebrating each students heritage. These students deserve the resources to get ahead!
My Project
I work in small groups multiple times a day while teaching ESL. My students need focused attention and modeling from me while working to learn letters, sounds, and new words.
I am requesting a table and stools because currently we do not have a space to meet for our language intervention time where I can easily assist all of the students in my group.
The kidney shaped table will allow all students equal distance from me while also getting enough room to work. The easel will be used daily as well to model for students during small group lessons. The alphabet sound tubs and the emergent readers will be invaluable resources for my students while learning English during our small group intervention. While working with English Language Learners I have learned anything hands on is always more helpful and these sound tubs will allow students to explore different items that have the same sound. This hands-on exploration will create a greater and more lasting connection for letter sounds which will benefit students forever in their lives while reading, speaking, and writing in English.
