Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your favorite story growing up? That one book that your mom or dad had to read over and over to you until the pages were torn? This Texas Longhorns classroom of twenty pre-kindergarten students needs your help in order to find their perfect story!
My students, even though they are some of the youngest learners at our school, are some of the most dedicated and energetic students you will ever know.
One of their favorite times of the day is our read aloud time. They love to use their sense of hearing to listen to the words as they are spoken from the page. Their eyes are glued to every page as we use the pictures to depict different reading comprehension skills. Most of my students are from a low-income background, and they struggle with the issue of underdeveloped oral language skills because of a "word gap." With the help of a listening center, my students will be able to develop their oral language and eventually their reading skills.
My Project
My students need audio books and a listening center with headphones in our class. With the materials you would be helping fund, the Longhorns can listen to these stories during our workstation time. My students will be independently working to read along with the stories in the listening station. As they flip through each page in the book, the audio version of the book will be playing through the headphones at the new listening center. This will help train my students' ears and develop print awareness. With this help, the Longhorns will enhance reading comprehension skills as well as oral language development.
With this donation, the Longhorns will be able to develop pre-reading and pre-writing skills they need for their entry into kindergarten in a year.
In addition, they will be able to independently learn more vocabulary in their listening center and increase their speaking. Our class goals are to become the best listeners, speakers, and readers. With this class donation, our new listening center will be able to improve all these skills!
