Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Transitional Kindergarten is very special because it helps prepare students to be successful in Kindergarten. They arrive at school excited and ready to learn. However, many times they lack basic essentials. Many of my students and their families have fled their home countries in order to pursue a better life. Once they arrive, they live in high-poverty, violent neighborhoods with very few resources. Parents have had little to no education themselves. My school has a growing population that speaks a Mayan dialect. These students are working on mastering 3 languages. Due to parents speaking another language and social/cultural norms being different they experience the school setting at a higher rigor. Despite these challenges, parents push their kids to succeed at school because they want a better life for them.
My students carry the great responsibility of being the hope for their families.
The hope that through their education they will be successful individuals that will give back to their community.
My Project
Young kids love singing, and because of this, I want to help my students learn academic language and content through music. A portable Bluetooth speaker will help me do this because I will be able to link my phone or computer to it and play learning songs.
A lot of my students are English Language Learners, and they sometimes feel nervous about practicing their English.
The music helps lower their affective filter and makes the learning fun. I have them sing everything from learning letters, numbers, shapes, and science and social studies content. A portable Bluetooth speaker will help me play the music from anywhere in my classroom as we move from one area to another for different topics.
