My Students

My students may all come from different backgrounds but they have one thing in common, hearts that are full of love for learning! My students work so hard and can't wait to show their teacher the progress they've made. They're always asking to read their writing journals or to read the next level book in guided reading. The joy they show for learning is contagious. They enjoy the small incentives that show they have done a good job, such as a stamp on their hand.

I work in a small town community school in North Carolina.

The teachers, parents and students support each other and work together to ensure every child’s needs are met!

My Project

First Grade is the year that students go from beginning to read to being much more fluent readers. I want to make sure I show my students in many different ways, how reading can bring us joy!

Giving students the opportunity to hear their favorite books on tape or CD will build their fluency and allow to them to escape into a whole different world.

They can hear a story read with expression, increase their vocabulary and be exposed to different cultures.

Students will also be able to put our standards in practice after listening to a story. For example, they may be asked to identify the problem and the solution in the story or the lesson that a character learned.

The listening center will help them to deepen their comprehension skills, which will in turn, help them to succeed in all academic areas.
