Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

At the end of the 2014-2015 school year I would like for my students to overcome their fears of being a reluctant readers. I want to see them develop into oral fluent readers across the curriculum.

Our public school is located in an urban setting in Michigan.

At our school 99% of our students receives free or reduce lunch. My class is populated with students with intellectual disabilities, autism, other health impairments, and learning disabilities. Their ages range from 6-9 years old and there is a total of 10 students assigned to my classroom.

My Project

The students will use the recorder independently in centers inside the classroom. The students will use the recorder to increase their reading fluency skills which will improve their comprehension. Also, it will encourage conversational turn-taking and eliminate intimidation that teacher's presences might cause and help create a digital portfolio of the students progress that can be shared with parents.

Having the recorder as part of our daily routine will encourage student to read more.

This will also, give them the opportunity to hear how they sound reading so they can make a comparison to fluent reading. This will also reduce the number of reluctant readers in the classroom and increase comprehension which develop fluent readers.
