My students need A Big Book Storytelling Activity Kit to engage them in retelling stories and to promote story-related comprehension and expressive vocabulary.
My students are in grades 1-5. The students I teach need small group intervention to be the best readers they can be. My school is a high poverty school. Many of the students do not have access to a wide variety of books in their home. Most do not go to the public library to check out books. The books they read at school are more than likely all they will read that day.
My students are eager to learn and want to succeed and become better readers!
They are encouraged when they are successful. They love when they are able to read pages in a book and want to read the pages over and over again!
My school is a very welcoming place where parents are encouraged to visit and become involved. We plan two reading nights a year to promote reading. We have an amazing turn-out at these events. Parents want to know what to do to help their child succeed in school.
My Project
Many of my students lack necessary skills they need to be successful readers. One of their needs is phonemic awareness, which is a prerequisite to reading. They need to be able to hear the sounds in words and to identify rhyming words. One of the best strategies to use to increase rhyming identification is nursery rhymes! Nursery rhymes have been used for generations as a fun way to increase students' ability to hear rhymes in words.
Kids build phonemic awareness…with a fun-filled storytelling kit that brings 5 classic nursery rhymes to life!
The ready-to-use kit includes 5 different story cards filled with fun rhymes and wordplay that heighten children’s awareness of individual sounds. The students will use adorable characters and props to act out each rhyme and keep interest and involvement high.
Another need for my students is to increase their vocabulary and comprehension skills. One way to build these skills is to use retelling activities. Retelling enhances vocabulary which in turn increases students' understanding of text. Studies have shown that retelling stories encourages children to use their imagination, expand their ideas, and create visual images as they transfer the plot [of the story] to new settings, including different characters or new voices. With the Big Book Storytelling Activity Kits, students will have all the materials they need to bring storytelling to life!
