Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Health Education to students in grades K through 5 in the New York public school system. Our students live in a high poverty area and most receive free or reduced price lunch.
Health Education is a New York State mandate and we are one of the few schools to offer it through an excellent curriculum developed by the Department of Education and the New York School of Medicine. All the key areas of concern are covered: nutrition, personal and consumer health, injury prevention, physical education, and mental/emotional health. By teaching students the proper way to care for their health, I am helping them get a leg up on future success, long-term health and the happiness that comes with it.
The unit concerning personal and consumer health is thorough, with many opportunities for learning that would be greatly enhanced by materials such as those I am requesting in this proposal. One of the topics covered is the proper care of teeth. Giving each child their own toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste will exponentially increase the effectiveness of the lessons.
The students I teach come to school each day burdened by the poverty in which they live, yet remain eager and enthusiastic learners. Your support of this project will help these students learn good health habits that will enhance their quality of life now and for the rest of their lives. Giving the gift of self-actualized, healthy living to these amazing students is an awesome and highly rewarding opportunity.
