This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I am excited to give my students the opportunity to plant a school fruit and vegetable garden and read books about how they can help our planet. Many of our students do not have the opportunity to plant gardens or eat healthy food that they can grow. I want them to know that even kids can make an impact on our planet!
We are taking full advantage of Earth Day to explain the importance of fruits and vegetables and how they can be grown at school and home.
Starting at a young age, they will understand the importance of eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle.
We are starting our garden from scratch, so we need everything! We will take this as a teachable moment and learn why tools are needed and certain other things must be done. The plan is to plant lettuce, pumpkin, cucumber and carrot seeds in raised beds from seed and blueberry plants . We will incorporate STEM activities to measure, design and estimate the garden and the final outcome. We want our students to understand that with their hard work they can produce delicious fruits and vegetables.
