Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are driven, hard-working, bright, humorous, intelligent, and kind. They attend a Title I public school meaning they are from a high poverty, low-income community in which the vast majority receive free or reduced lunch. I teach high school mathematics in an underfunded, marginalized urban school.

My Project

My students face fiscal challenges at home and do not always have the resources to bring healthy snacks for a full day of learning, after school tutoring, and extra curricular activities. My students are not only mathematicians and scholars, they are athletes, active community members, and volunteers- always on the go, not always packing a snack. Many of my students resort to unhealthy eating choices out of convenience and cost. I aim to provide them healthy choices to promote smart food choices and eating. I want my classroom to be full of academic resources, but also basic needs.

As we begin to mathematically analyze and compare the prices and advertisements of various popular snacks in the community, I wish to highlight some options that are more nutrient dense.

If any of my students experience food insecurity, I want them to be confident that there will be healthy snacks and water available in my classroom before, during, and after school during tutoring hours.
