My Students
I teach in a Title One school where more than half of the students come from low income families. Many students have blended families and parents who work long hours, making it hard to provide the educational support at home.
"Can I?" Each student finds his or her own comfort zone when they are allowed to explore and find out what works for them, while working in an inviting environment!
"I can do it" That is the excitement I get to hear when my students learn something new, whether it is learning new words or beginning to read chapter books, mastering a new math skill or exploring a science topic.
I currently teach first grade with amazing students with various academic abilities.
My Project
Being in a Title One School, meaning more than fifty percent of the students are from low income families, many of my students come to school hungry or without a daily snack.
My goal, again this year, is to help improve my students' health and focus by providing them with a daily snack throughout the year.
When my students are hungry, they are distracted. When they are distracted, they do not learn to their fullest potential. Having had daily snack provided in previous years, I saw great improvement in my students' focus and classroom achievements.
If my students do not eat breakfast, I want them to know they can come to me in the morning and be confident in knowing they'll get a little something to eat to start their day. By the day's end, we're all hungry again and unfocused. My boys and girls need afternoon snacks to keep them going and each child deserves to have something!
