Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of our students come from low-income households and do not have access to life essentials such as hygiene products and food. Because America's racial and ethnic minorities are the fastest-growing sectors in the country and they make up a disproportionately large segment of the economically poor population, tending to their educational needs is in everyone's interest. The level of their educational achievements will dramatically affect the future of our nation.
Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress.
I work at the Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.
My experience with DonorsChoose.org and sponsors has been very positive and I hope to continue using this site as a bridge between my students and those out there who would like to be part of this amazing opportunity that takes place every day in our school.
My Project
Our students often struggle to pay attention in class due to constant hunger and stress. They aren't able to focus on their classwork and often come to me seeking food, water, and even extra snacks to take home to siblings. I also see many students eating junk food because they can not afford nutritious meals and snacks. They will come to the Wellness Center complaining of stomach aches and headaches from all the chemicals they ingest from their junk food. Malnutrition plagues our community and with liquor stores on almost every corner, we are constantly trying to promote healthy habits and create change. I am hoping to provide organic applesauce that is unsweetened and gluten-free, organic premium roasted seaweed, as well as Clorox wipes to clean up any messes on desks.
Being able to provide our most at-risk students with snacks and food will allow them to feel safe, cared for, and ready to focus in class.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
