My students need healthy snack options for the afternoons since they eat breakfast so early in the day and most of them do not have a healthy snack to bring for themselves from home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The school I work at is very diverse. Teaching in a low-income, high poverty setting is challenging, but so rewarding. Many of our students come from homes with limited resources. A very high percentage of our student body is on free and reduced lunch. I hope to give these students the highest quality education possible, one that leaves them wishing it didn't have to be the weekend. I hope to be able to purchase new resources for my Kinders so that they are excited to come to school to learn in an environment that is warm and welcoming. Perhaps for a moment in time, they will forget about their worries from home when they step into our classroom.
My Project
By refueling their bodies with healthy snacks such as pretzels and crackers in the afternoon, my students will be able to focus on their work all the way through until the end of the day. These nutritious foods with give them plenty of energy to do what they came to school to do, grow their minds. My students have an extended day at our school and the afternoon is quite long after their early lunch so having something to snack on would mean so much to them. Many of them want to bring something from home, but it just isn't an option for them so this will help ensure that all Kinder students have a full belly to get them through their day.
