My Students

Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

Before students are able to access any of the information we teach them, we need to ensure their bodies are safe, comfortable, and healthy. This includes making sure all students have had enough to eat before learning begins for the day and also that they have enough to sustain them throughout a day of learning.

It is extremely hard to focus if all you can think about is your stomach growling when you're hungry.

Many of my students with autism find it difficult to continue through the day between breakfast and lunch as well as lunch and arriving home without taking small breaks to snack. With all of the items requested, we hope to stock our snack cabinet in our classroom with healthy food options that our students can pick from during snack breaks. Items like fruit cups, juice, and applesauce pouches will be so beneficial to our students who will be able to eat a quick bite and continue on with learning for the day.
