My students are amazing kids. They are kind, helpful, hardworking, and try their best both academically and socially every day. Unfortunately, in addition to the typical challenges a third grader may experience, my students often have additional stressors in their lives beyond their control. I try to create a learning environment that is safe and rigorous and also supports their wide variety of social and emotional needs.
Families at our school are loving, hardworking, and care so much about their children's education.
We are an urban school that celebrates diversity. Our student population includes a mix of African American, Latino, and Asian Pacific Islander students. We serve English Language Learners, support special needs through inclusion, and provide strong social-emotional support to all students. Additionally, over 75% of the students attending our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Food is a basic need I'm trying to make sure my students don't need to worry about. Students need breakfast and often need a snack between breakfast and lunch time. Many of my students can't afford to bring their own snack to school, so I'd like to provide that for them in the classroom.
When students are hungry, it is difficult for them to focus; and when students cannot focus, they aren't their best selves.
Additionally, to support my students' independence this year, I'm trying to provide snacks where they don't need to get my permission or help in getting the snack. I have found that when students can recognize what their body needs and can obtain it themselves, their self-understanding and agency grows. We are requesting snacks such as goldfish crackers, pretzels, and breakfast bars so students can help themselves when necessary.
